Washington State Library's collection of Captain Robert Colburn Fay, 1820-1872, correspondence, records and journal, 1845-1861.

This collection consists of photocopies of the correspondence and records of Captain Robert Colburn Fay, local Indian Agent, Penn's Cove and Scatchet Head, Whidbey Island, and Port Townsend, for the period from Dec. 29, 1856 to Sept. 30, 1861. There are approximately 135 letters in the collection of which 45 were written by Capt. Fay. The records consist of 108 items ranging from routine invoices, vouchers, quarterly reports, annual reports, special reports and brief records of travel. The collection also contains a black & white negative of a portrait of R. C. Fay.

Robert C. Fay was born in Cuttingsville, Vermont in 1820. In 1845 and 1847 he sailed as mate on the ship Harvest going for whales and whale oil. By 1849 he acted as skipper with Capt. Isaiah Folger as Master on the Schooner "Exact" on a trip up the coast that was the first settlers to land at Alki Point, WA on 13 Nov. 1851. Capt. Maud P. Mitchell was born about 1883 in Oregon. She married Chas. R. Mitchell and by 1920 they were living in Chehalis, WA. Charles was an assistant cashier at the bank.
